Planning a short international holiday from India? Compare Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bali, Dubai and other destinations by trip length, travel style, sightseeing, beaches, family travel and planning difficulty.
Planning an international holiday sounds exciting until you actually start comparing destinations.
One person recommends Thailand. Someone else says Vietnam is better. Your family wants Dubai. Your friends want Bali. Then you start checking flights, hotels, sightseeing, visa requirements and travel time — and suddenly choosing the destination becomes harder than planning the holiday itself.
The truth is, there is no single best international destination from India.
The right destination depends on how many days you have, who you are travelling with, what you want to do and how much time you are willing to spend moving around.
For a 5–7 day international holiday, destinations such as Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Bali and Dubai can all work well, but they offer very different experiences.
This guide is written to help you choose based on the kind of holiday you actually want, rather than simply following whatever destination is trending.
A short international holiday needs to be planned differently from a two-week trip.
You have limited time, so a good destination should ideally offer:
This is why I generally don't recommend trying to cover an entire country during a five-day holiday.
The best short trip is usually the one where you spend more time experiencing the destination and less time sitting in transfers.
Here are some destinations I would consider when planning a short international holiday from India.
| Destination | Best For | Ideal Trip Style |
|---|---|---|
| Thailand | Beaches, nightlife, couples, families | 5–7 days |
| Vietnam | Culture, food, scenery, value | 5–7+ days |
| Malaysia | City, shopping, culture, families | 4–7 days |
| Bali | Couples, beaches, relaxation | 5–7 days |
| Dubai | Luxury, shopping, family attractions | 4–6 days |
| Singapore | Families, first-time travellers | 4–6 days |
| Sri Lanka | Nature, culture, road trips | 5–7 days |
The important part is not simply choosing the destination with the longest list of attractions.
Ask yourself:
“What do I actually want from this holiday?”
That question usually makes the decision much easier.
Thailand remains one of the easiest destinations to consider when you want a holiday with a mixture of city life, beaches, shopping and entertainment.
For a first trip, popular combinations include:
Bangkok + Pattaya
or
Bangkok + Phuket
The choice depends on the type of experience you want.
Bangkok gives you the city experience, shopping, food and sightseeing, while destinations such as Pattaya and Phuket provide a very different beach-oriented side of Thailand.
If you are travelling as a couple, Thailand can offer a good balance between sightseeing and leisure.
For families, the itinerary can be adjusted to focus more on attractions and comfortable sightseeing rather than nightlife.

One common mistake is trying to combine Bangkok, Pattaya, Phuket and several islands in a five-day trip.
It may look impressive on paper, but you will spend a lot of time travelling.
Vietnam is an excellent choice if you want an international trip that feels different from the typical beach holiday.
Depending on the number of days available, you can explore:
The important thing is not to try to cover all of them in one short trip.
For 5–7 days, choose one region rather than attempting to travel from north to south.
For example:
Hanoi + Ninh Binh + Ha Long Bay
is a completely different trip from:
Da Nang + Hoi An
Both can be excellent, but combining both routes in a short holiday can make the itinerary unnecessarily tiring.
You can read our detailed Vietnam trip from India guide before deciding which route suits you.
Malaysia is particularly suitable if you want a relatively straightforward international holiday centred around Kuala Lumpur.
A 4 Nights / 5 Days Malaysia itinerary can work well for first-time visitors.
You can combine:
One of the advantages of Malaysia for a short holiday is that you don't necessarily need to change hotels repeatedly.
You can use Kuala Lumpur as your base and explore the city at a comfortable pace.
We have also prepared a more detailed Malaysia trip from India travel guide.
Bali is a destination where the pace of the holiday can be as important as the sightseeing.
It is especially popular with couples because you can combine sightseeing with beaches, resorts, cafés and quieter experiences.
Depending on your itinerary, you can explore areas such as:
But again, don't try to stay in every part of Bali during a short trip.
Choose your hotel location based on what you actually want to do.
If you want culture and nature, spending more time around Ubud can make sense.
If your priority is beaches, restaurants and nightlife, another area may suit you better.
Before planning your trip, you can also read our Bali trip guide and budget planning article.
Dubai is a very different kind of international holiday.
Instead of traditional sightseeing alone, the experience is built around modern architecture, shopping, entertainment, restaurants and large-scale attractions.
A short Dubai itinerary can include:
The advantage of Dubai for a short holiday is that you don't necessarily need a long itinerary to experience several different sides of the destination.
However, Dubai can become expensive if you keep adding premium experiences, private transfers and paid attractions without planning the overall budget.
For a more detailed comparison, see our guide on Dubai tour packages versus planning a Dubai trip yourself.
Singapore is a particularly good option for travellers who prefer a clean, organised city environment and want several attractions within a relatively compact area.
It can work well for:
The biggest advantage is that you can cover a lot without travelling huge distances between destinations.
However, Singapore should be planned carefully because attraction tickets and other expenses can add up quickly.
Sri Lanka is worth considering if you want something different from a pure city or beach holiday.
The destination can combine:
The biggest difference is that the journey itself can become part of the holiday.
For a 5–7 day trip, however, you need to plan the route carefully.
Don't select destinations simply because they look close together on a map.
Road travel times can make a major difference to your actual holiday experience.
If you're travelling as a couple, I would shortlist:
For beaches, entertainment and a mixture of experiences.
For resorts, relaxation, cafés, nature and romantic experiences.
For food, scenery, culture and something less conventional.
For luxury, restaurants, shopping and modern experiences.
But there is no universal winner.
A couple who wants a peaceful resort holiday may enjoy Bali much more than Bangkok.
A couple who wants nightlife and activities may prefer Thailand.
A couple interested in food and culture may enjoy Vietnam.
For families, I would generally look for destinations where:
Good options can include:
Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Thailand.
The best choice depends heavily on the children's ages and the family's interests.
For example, an itinerary that is perfect for two adults may not work well for a family travelling with young children.
If this is your first international holiday from India, don't choose a destination simply because it has the most attractions.
Choose one where you feel comfortable with:
For many first-time travellers, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore and Dubai can be practical options.
But your departure city also matters.
A traveller from Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru or Ahmedabad may have different flight options and timings compared with someone travelling from another Indian city.
That is why a good travel plan should be built around the traveller rather than copied from someone else's itinerary.
This is one of the most important questions.
Best for:
Good for:
Better when you want:
Consider this if you want to explore a destination more deeply rather than simply visiting its most famous attractions.
There is no single correct answer.
The important thing is to compare what you actually receive, not simply the advertised package price.
A cheaper package with inconvenient hotels and limited inclusions may not be better value than a properly planned itinerary.
Before booking, ask yourself these seven questions:
Don't plan a ten-day itinerary when you only have five days.
A honeymoon itinerary and a family itinerary should not look identical.
This immediately eliminates several destinations.
Some travellers want to see something every morning.
Others want breakfast, a pool and a slow afternoon.
Neither approach is wrong.
Two hotel changes in five days can be exhausting for some travellers.
Food can actually make a major difference to how much you enjoy a destination.
This is the question people often forget.
Do you want photographs at famous landmarks?
A beach holiday?
Local food?
Shopping?
Adventure?
Culture?
Once you answer that, choosing the destination becomes much easier.
This is probably the most common mistake.
Five days does not mean five destinations.
Location matters.
A cheaper hotel far from the places you want to visit can cost you time and transportation expenses.
Google Maps may show a short distance, but traffic and actual road conditions can change the journey considerably.
More activities do not automatically mean a better holiday.
Leave some breathing room.
Always compare:
A flyer is not always the same thing as a detailed operational itinerary.
Always check what is actually confirmed before travelling.
I recommend keeping a simple checklist.
Check departure time, arrival time, baggage and connection details.
Check the exact hotel, room category and location.
Check whether airport and sightseeing transfers are included and what type of vehicle is being used.
Check exactly which attractions are included.
Check whether breakfast, lunch or dinner is included.
Check the current entry and travel requirements applicable to your nationality and travel dates.
Consider suitable travel insurance for your trip.
Keep important contact details and travel documents accessible.
This five-minute check can prevent many problems later.
If you ask me which destination is the best international trip from India, I won't immediately give you one country.
I'll first ask:
How many days do you have?
Then:
Who are you travelling with?
Then:
What do you actually want to do?
Because a destination is only "best" when it fits the traveller.
For example:
The right answer changes with the traveller.
For a 5–7 day holiday from India, there are plenty of good options.
If you want beaches and entertainment, look at Thailand.
If you want a relaxed couples' holiday, Bali is worth considering.
If food, culture and scenery matter most, consider Vietnam.
If you want a comfortable city holiday with shopping and sightseeing, Malaysia is a strong option.
If your priority is modern attractions, shopping and family entertainment, Dubai can be a good fit.
If you want a compact and organised family destination, consider Singapore.
And if you want nature and a road-trip style holiday, Sri Lanka deserves consideration.
Don't choose the destination with the biggest list of attractions.
Choose the destination that fits the time you have, the people you're travelling with and the kind of memories you want to bring home.

Thailand and Bali are popular choices for couples, while Vietnam and Dubai can also work very well depending on whether you prefer culture, food, relaxation, luxury or entertainment.
Malaysia, Singapore, Dubai and Thailand can be good family options because they offer varied sightseeing and activities.
Yes. The key is choosing one destination or a compact regional itinerary rather than trying to cover too many places.
It depends on your experience and preferences. Packages can simplify hotels, transfers and sightseeing, while independent travel gives you greater flexibility.
Choose Thailand if beaches, entertainment and a mixture of city and leisure are important. Choose Vietnam if you are more interested in culture, food, history and scenery.
Yes. Kuala Lumpur can work particularly well for a 4–5 day international break, especially for first-time visitors and families.
Trying to cover too many cities. A shorter itinerary with enough time to enjoy each destination is usually better than constantly moving between hotels.
